Fishery
The rich commercial fishery is a focal point of the regional
economy,
accounting for 55% of business activity. The fishery is long
established
and diversified in its product mix. The region harvests and
processes herring, lobster, crab, scallops,
mackerel and groundfish.
The advent of Free Trade between the United States and Canada
offers opportunities for
processing more value-added products within the region. Other
foreign markets are also open.
Herring roe for the Japanese markets is being processed in the
region, providing an opportunity
for additional growth. The region looks to the future in terms of
contributing to New Brunswick's
expanding aquaculture industry.
Agriculture
Through the utilization of fruit and vegetables, agricultural
activities are expanding in the area.
For example, sizable potato crops and greenhouses where lettuce is
grown hydroponically
have proven successful ventures. In Saint-Joseph, a local
entrepreneur has turned an apple
cider operation into a small business success story. As well, a
feasibility study is being considered to make
more productive use of seafood processing facilities in the
off-season for agricultural products.
A large amount of land on the Tantramar marshes is now being used
for the production of forage (hay).
The product is being effectively marketed domestically and
internationally to markets in Europe,
Bermuda and Middle East countries.
Manufacturing
Building on the area's traditional resource base, entrepreneurs in
the wood industry have come a long
way. The manufacture of products such as fishing boats, windows,
doors and kitchen cabinets has
shown excellent growth. The region's diversified manufacturing
base includes industries involved
in food processing, metal and plastics fabrication, Eastern
Canada's largest glass manufacturer and
a winery.
Skilled Labour Force
Through a pool of skilled and productive labour, manufacturers are
ensuring that quality is the
key ingredient to success. Manufacturing and processing
opportunities in wood, fisheries,
agriculture and metal are flourishing in the area.
Industrial Parks
Fully Serviced lans at attractive prices is available at the
Industrial Parks of Sackville and Scoudouc.
These parks are close to air, highway, rail and sea transportation
services.
Education
The region has access to excellent educational facilities. Two
well-known universities serving the
English-speaking and French-speaking populations of New Brunswick
are Mount Allison and
Université de Moncton. Saint-Joseph is home to the Memramcook
Institute, which is
developing a reputation for its achievements in drama, dance and
the arts. The Institute is also
well-known as a training centre for adult education and language
training. Accommodations
within the facility can be rented by business to train employees.
French language and English language community colleges for skills
training are close by in
Dieppe and Moncton.
Tourism
From the region's own beaches on the Northumberland Strait that are
famous for their golden sand
and warm sea bathing, to hills and valleys of the Trans-Canada
Highway near Memramcook,
visitors to the area will be truly mesmerized by the region's
natural beauty.
Facilities like the two marinas and the water theme park in Shediac
provide recreational
activities for visitors to enjoy.
The South East area is closely located to attractive leisure
facilities,
including Fundy and Kouchibouguac National Parks.
